Flower Farming?

What is a flower farmer? According to Farmer Bailey, a flower farmer is someone that grows flowers to sell for profit. I’ve grown up and been involved with some sort of farming my entire life, and I had never heard of such a thing. “You can grow flowers in your backyard and sell them? Yes, apparently you can. Growing up, I’ve always lived on a farm, my dad grew peas and wheat, all my uncles grew potatoes, my husband grazed cattle, so I’m use to farming, but flowers???

It’s shocking I had never heard of this, given the fact I live in prime flower growing country. Floret resides less than 10 miles from me, The Farmhouse Flower Farm is about 15 miles and The Dahlia House is about 2 minutes from my work. I did know about tulips. I mean, I do survive the yearly Tulip Festival.

Daughter busy with horses, son busy with sports, farm upkeep of our own, I try and play bookkeeper with my husbands excavation business, and oh yea, I’m also a registered nurse.

I had been looking at hobby greenhouses for a long time. Intentions of growing petunias and such for hanging baskets was on list of things I wanted to try. I tried it and killed just about everything I planted.

Holiday shopping 2021, I find myself strolling around a local nursery bizarre, I come across the weird looking corms of the ranunculus. Intrigued by the ugliness of the corms and the beauty it would one day turn into. I bought a pack and soon found myself down this rabbit hole of ranunculus, dahlias, sweet peas, eucalyptus and more.

Do I consider myself a flower farmer? I still have a hard time using that term. I more like to think of it as I’m growing some really nice flowers and if somebody wants some or wants to be a part of it. That’s just great.

P.S. Still nursing…

Such a learning process

But so much fun.
